elliot-minor-solarisHaving enjoyed some success in recent times—including a top 10 debut LP—Elliot Minor return in emotionally-charged, ambitious style with album number two. This is pop-rock firmly wedged at the ‘pop’ end of the scale: it’s music of the introspective ballad and tug-away-at-your-heart-strings variety, with Alex Davies’ lovelorn, heartfelt vocals supported by an excess of tinkering keys, stirring orchestration and the occasional sudden swerve into guitar solo territory. It’s a mash of Muse, Sunset Avenue and Coldplay, and as a band Elliot Minor have got the hooks and the tunes to soon have you cheerfully humming along.

The potential album standout moment comes in the form of ‘Better Than The Courtroom’, featuring verses so downright spot-on at pulling those heartstrings into knots that most acoustic guitar-wielding songwriters would probably commit murder to have to written it. But—and this ‘but’ is indicative of a lot of ‘Solaris’, sadly—the song is ultimately a little underwhelming, thanks here to a chorus that feels lazy after such a strong build-up. ‘Solaris’, then, is a bunch of tracks that show Elliot Minor to be perfectly competent in what they do but missing a certain something.

After an incredible 2008/09 so far, which has included a debut top 10 album, 2 full headline UK and European tours, European dates with Simple Plan, Radio 1 B listed singles, over 125,000 singles sold and a whole run of festivals, ELLIOT MINOR are now set to release their new single ‘Electric High’ on October 5th and second album ‘Solaris’ October 19th.

‘Electric High’ signifies a more mature leap forward in every department for ELLIOT MINOR, from playing to song writing, production and ambition. Along with recent single ‘Solaris’, front man and songwriter Alex Davies started writing the new material as soon as the band came off the road in December last year. The new songs pull from the band’s experiences of making and touring their first album, as songwriter Alex Davies says “I had heard about the pressures of a second album on the songwriter and I can assure you it is true, you have all your life to write your first album and months to write your second. Fortunately I had a load of melodies running around my head and lyric ideas that pulled from the changes in my life over the years that Elliot Minor was formed till now.  The majority of the songs are uplifting as I was being positive in a pretty tough year to work through and the others are more personal and intimate.

The new single was recorded during the album sessions starting in April this year at Chapel Studios in Lincoln and at Mavehole Studios in York.  Produced once again by Jim Wirt (Incubus, Hoobastank, Something Corporate) and mixed by the multi Grammy award winning Tom Lord-Alge (Manic Street Preachers, Taking Back Sunday, Weezer, The Rolling Stones), this second collaboration meant that the band and Jim knew what had worked before but gave them a lot of room to add new creative ideas and to push into bold new territory. Jim Wirt says “Electric High was a natural….everything came together immediately!  We ended up using the original scratch vocal, and the original guitars, this is what makes this song stand out, nothing contrived about it.” Live wise, the band have played Oxegen, T in the Park, Leeds and Reading and Download last year. They also played main support to Simple Plan in Europe and Fall Out Boy in the UK, have been to Japan three times doing their own headline shows, have toured as a headline act through Europe into Paris, Prague, Brussels and Amsterdam on every tour. On top of this, they have also taken the likes of You Me at Six, We are the Ocean, The Higher and Mission District out as support. A huge UK headline tour has now been announced, full list of dates are below:
