iglLos Angeles based 5 piece Iglu & Hartly return with a brand new single ‘Dedication’ on November 23rd 2009. Last year the band embarked on a full assault of the UK, with 2 sold out tours (which saw the band play 130 gigs in 150 days across 17 countries), and a top 5 hit single ‘In This City’, which has sold over 150k copies in the UK alone.  The single scored them A-list plays on Radio One, Capital and Radio 2;  receiving over 8000 plays on UK radio to date, as well as a shirtless performance on the Jonathan Ross show.  The band headlined two NME Brats dates, and were listed in the NME’s ‘25 Bands making America cool again’ feature.

Iglu & Hartly have had a busy summer, playing festivals the US and Canada, and Summersonic in Japan. They also played at Oxygen, T In The Park and rocked 40,000 people at the Isle Of Wight Festival. Check out the footage here.
Since their initial onslaught, Iglu & Hartly have gone from strength to strength, writing new songs and touring the world. With a groundswell of fans (the andhammer army), some of whom are getting Tattood with the andhammer logo, ready to well and truly carry the flag for the band into 2010 and beyond. Their track ‘Dayglo’ is set to take over US pop radio as we speak.

With this single, and The Dedication EP released early January, Iglu & Hartly are set to prove that they are here to stay, dedicated to their fans, and more importantly, to the music.

Biffy Clyro, one of the foremost and influential rock bands in the UK right now, will be releasing their new single, ‘The Captain’, on 26 October through 14th Floor Records.  The single is taken from their highly anticipated forthcoming new album Only Revolutions, to be released on 9 November 2009.  ‘The Captain’ follows on from Biffy Clyro’s recent massive top 10 single ‘That Golden Rule’, which was put on the Radio 1 A list a full 5 weeks upfront; and ‘Mountains’, which was released in August 2008 and became their biggest single chart success to date, entering the UK chart in the top 5 and selling over 100,000 copies.

In November 2009, Biffy Clyro will be playing a fifteen-date tour of the UK and Ireland.  The tour will see the band return to London’s Brixton Academy on 12 November after their triumphant sell-out gig at the venue last December, as well as two home-coming shows at Glasgow’s Barrowlands on the 2 and 3 of November.  This will be the first series of live dates for Biffy Clyro after the release of their impending new album.  The album, the band’s fifth and second with 14th Floor Records, is being recorded in LA, once again with Puzzle’s producer GGGarth Richardson (Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers), and mixed by Andy Wallace (Coldplay, Nirvana, Faith No More) and is set to be a vital and monumental record.

Record Label: Rabid Records
Download Album: Fever Ray
Our Rating:

A4‘Fever Ray’ is the debut solo album from Karin Dreijer Andersson, one half of Swedish brother & sister act ‘The Knife’. With minimalist electronica, hypnotic rhythms and 80’s pop sensibilities, ‘Fever Ray’ creates a magnificent, brooding, dystopian soundscape that is both accessible and challenging. Opening track ‘If I Had A Heart’ rumbles in with a menacing bassline, grasping your attention from the offset, as you enter into Anderson’s dark netherworld. Imaginative arrangements bring in elements of Eastern mysticism, Navajo- style ethereal chants and South American pan-pipes add to the dreamy effect on tracks like ‘Triangle Walks’, ‘Keep the Streets Empty For Me’ and the outstanding ‘Coconut’. Anderson’s natural voice is similar to the impish Bjork’s, though distorted vocals are used on a couple of tracks, which, despite sounding a bit like Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs, actually work surprisingly well. The striking cover art also expresses the atmosphere of Anderson’s twilight dreamscape; the overall effect is like being transported to the forest in children’s favourite ‘Where The Wild Things Are’ with Kraftwerk’s ‘Radioactivity’ playing in the background. ‘Fever Ray’ can be gloomy and uplifting, yet always compelling. It could well be the most surprisingly inventive album you will hear all year.

4Funerals are not always that depressing, I mean, I agree as nights out go, they’re not your first choice, but on April 4th a funeral is where I found myself, watching the last ever Captain Black gig at the Borderline. Captain Black, a band that have sailed the tumultuous waves of the indie ocean for a fair few years now, have chosen this night to launch their album and to coincide it with their break up as a band. Captain Black come out of the once feted and much maligned Camden Town boozer the Hawley Arms. Their record company Bumpman are ran out the back of the pub and most of the band have served time behind the bar at various times.

The Sam McCarthy band act as support, they are the latest band out on Bumpman and have just released their debut single ‘Cherry Tree’ which tonight is fittingly dedicated to Captain Black. They inhabit an indie world where pop is not a dirty word and have, in Sam a genuinely likeable front man. The three-piece play with childish charm and a collective smile spreads across the face of the crowd. Then Sam plays his trump card, ‘Three Hearts Collide’ a twisted tale of misplaced morals and bitter betrayals that weaves around the crowd, whipping them up into a crescendo of waves that Sam rides down through the venue.

Captain Black arrive onstage overwhelmed by the warmth and willingness to perform. ‘East London Walls’ and ‘Abraham’s Knife’ are dispatched with panache and a knowing nod. ‘Come On Up To Our House’ the bands biggest hit, is played and the crowd duly erupt. The stage is invaded by Sam McCarthy who takes up unprompted backing vocals. The song is acoustic pop perfection boasting a chorus that by rights should be sung by best friends and lovers for years to come. The band finishes on ‘Sister’ a song that that depicts the perennial teenage boy problem of girls looking upon them as siblings, rather than shags.

The crowd do not so much demand an encore, as make it clear that if it is the bands intention to leave the borderline tonight, then there best be one. Having only a few songs in the cannon, a quick decision is made to replay two from earlier,  ‘The Singer Is Dead’ is fitting and epic in its delivery, telling the tale of forgotten 80s pop stars, who were only ever fully appreciated after they had gone. The more misty eyed amongst us would call it symbolic and tonight who are we to argue? The final speeches of thank you and goodbyes are made, and glasses are raised in accordance. ‘Come On Up To Our House’s first note is played for the second time, bodies dive towards the stage, the crowd embrace the band emotionally huddle, it’s all a bit much for the cynical amongst us, but by the time your intrepid writer has been swept up by the emotion of it all and wiping a tear from the eye, what’s left to do but dive for the set list.

Captain Black were never going to straddle stadiums but, what they did do was beautiful in its own little way. As funerals go, they left a good looking corpse and the wake wasn‘t to bad either.

Download Album: Thomas Tantrum
Our Rating:

4ttthomasReaction to this debut will spark debate for centuries to come, nay millennia. That name; is it ingenious or gimmicky? Is childlike singer, Megan Thomas, the band’s finest asset, or their downfall? Is their music as zingy as a Refresher or as annoying as a packet of sour cola bottles? Let it be said that, in my humble opinion, the name is great and aforementioned singer sounds a bit like a delinquent pixie (or Sleeper front-woman, Louise Wener, on helium.) Comparisons to those Brit-pop has-beens don’t end there either. Thomas Tantrum’s songs are layered with a similar smattering of nonchalance and romantic cool, but delivered with a hyperactive zeal. `What What What` is like the Long Blondes grinding into a waltz, whilst `Work It` is the band’s stuttering pop masterpiece. If you’re a fan of infectious, catchy pop then allow it to career, hand-jiving, into your life straight away. There is a fair amount of variety on show in the Tantrum set; `Shake It! Shake It!` is a lightweight, wiry ode to feeling lonely and unheard, whilst `Why The English Are Rubbish` is a saucy, French-talking, catwalk-strutting indie delight. Sometimes Thomas sounds like the precocious, know-it-all kid sister of Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ sex-rock queen, Karen O. Or a St Trinians extra. But, for the cynical among us though, much of this album will skirt that fine line between loveable and irritating as, like a budgie in a cage, Thomas’ voice struggles to escape its somewhat restrictive range.
