It may have taken 16 years to produce, and yes, the original line-up is nowhere to be seen, apart from the obvious, but Axl Rose doesn’t disappoint with ‘Chinese Democracy’. Although criminally over produced -probably 16 years of over production- it still has the fundamentals that made us love one of America’s best ever rock bands, in the first place. Rose’s voice still has the prophecy that you could be forgiven for thinking, may have lost it’s ferocious edge. Rammed full of typically colossal guitar solo’s and stomping riffs, even if you tried to hate this record, you’d still listen to it as a guilty pleasure. It’s as unhinged as you’d expect and very much audacious. The closest Rose gets to re-creating a ‘November Rain’ or ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’ is the epic ‘IRS’. The titled track also whips the rock-aesthetics up to open the album, then it just grows into a rock classic, ‘Better’ enthused with hip-hop make-up, bolstered with flavoursome rock licks and thunking hooks. Some may think that this albums wait, outweighed Rose’s ability, don’t be so foolish!
